Hi everyone and welcome to my new, improved, and updated blog. For those of you totally new then I guess I should take a little time to introduce myself and tell you what the heck you will be looking at.
My name is Mike Fowler and I……geez, it’s hard to actually describe yourself. Hell, I would love to say I’m a dead ringer for Brad Pitt or Channing Tatum, but I lack the movie star looks and killer dance moves. Still working on it though.
For years, I defined myself by my job which was being an American History teacher, but last year, during an early mid-life crisis/awakening, I chose to give it all up in pursuit of a new career which is being on the road as a Tour Director. Many would call me a “tour guide” but there’s a whole lot more to it than that. Regardless, I’m happy I made the leap and am still getting settled into my new reality. Throughout the last year, Ive taken groups throughout Canada, New England, Florida and even scored a gig in Cuba. Primarily though, I’ve been working in D.C. showing 8th graders the sites which I absolutely love.
I still consider myself a teacher, though, and I think I always will. It’s just a matter of reinventing and transforming the world into my classroom, with the added benefit of not having to grade papers or deal with helicopter parents who believe that the offspring which sprang forth from their loins could do no wrong.
In terms of what this whole blog is about, well, that truly remains to be seen. I’m suspecting it’s going to be as ADD as I am in real life. The plan is for it to be musings about travel, the people and places I visit and meet, reflections on the teaching world, and whatever else I deem fit. I will promise, however, that you will never have to encounter a single post about any of the Kardashian ilk or suffer through endless gossip about what celebrity was spotted eating at the Steak and Shake.
Finally, yes naturally, there will be quite a bit about visits to historic sites. Since I was a kid I have been an out and proud history nerd. When left to my own devices, a road trip will often detour to some random and bizarre site that very few people actually visit. Years ago, my partner was horrified that I dragged him to the gravesite of Stonewall Jackson’s arm. I really thought that was the end of our relationship, but being the great guy he is, he’s stuck it out with me. He just opts out of the road trips on occasion.
With all that said, I again welcome you to join in on my journey. Let’s do this.
