Periscope Tour: Oaklawn Cemetery

fullsizerender

I’ve always had a morbid fascination with cemeteries and often used to take my students and fellow road trappers on side trips to burial grounds to “dig up” the past. Cemeteries can provide valuable clues about those that have passed on before us.  As a classroom teacher, I always found them to be invaluable, especially in studying local history.

Join me for a special Periscope tour of Oaklawn Cemetery in Tampa, Florida on Tuesday, September 20 at 1:00 pm(EST).  Oaklawn is the final resting place of some truly interesting and infamous characters in Tampa history.  During the broadcast, we’ll chat about some of them, including a local love story that defied the odds of the time and I’ll also share a story about a local slave whose life and death closely mirrors To Kill a Mockingbird.  I will also talk about tombstone iconography and their meanings, plus other topics that come up during the broadcast through your questions.  Visit our landing page HERE for a free handout and lesson plan.

Please join me for this special learning experience.  I’d love to know if you plan on joining me.  Just shoot me a comment below and I’ll make sure to do a special shout out to your class!

A Gift from Mom

I think we all go through that phase where we are mortified by the thought of being seen with our parents. I remember clearly asking to be let off at the movie theater 3 blocks away from the entrance, so that everyone would never suspect that I had ever been given birth two by those embarrassing creatures.

My mom especially liked to torment me with her music and would grab anything and turn it into a guitar and wail some Elvis song at the top of her lungs. My friends always thought it was hilarious but I always wanted to crawl into the nearest closet and hide. Continue reading “A Gift from Mom”

Dining in the Dark

silenceofthelambs

I will admit up front that I’m not a foodie.  To me, food has always been very utilitarian.  If it tastes good, I appreciate it, but I’m definitely not the type to scrutinize every taste.  Unlike many others, when I travel, I’m not scoping out the trendy spots that often end up in the foodie mags.

With that said, I’m sure that I’ve completely lost the food critics so I’ll delve into the whole “Dining in the Dark” experience that I had in Ft. Lauderdale. Continue reading “Dining in the Dark”

Welcome

Hi everyone and welcome to my new, improved, and updated blog.  For those of you totally new then I guess I should take a little time to introduce myself and tell you what the heck you will be looking at.

My name is Mike Fowler and I……geez, it’s hard to actually describe yourself.  Hell, I would love to say I’m a dead ringer for Brad Pitt or Channing Tatum, but I lack the movie star looks and killer dance moves.  Still working on it though. Continue reading “Welcome”

History Makes Me Vomit

I have always loved a good road trip. Even as a young guy, I loved our family vacations where we would get up early in the morning and begin the long journey to Florida. I would prepare weeks ahead of time preparing my trip kit filled with games, candy, and drawing supplies.

Even now I can’t help but still enjoy those endless hours on the road stopping off at various locales like the worlds largest rocking chair or the BIG statue of Superman in Metropolis, Illinois. While many might use the interstates to get from point A to point B, I use them as a way of seeing all of the great Americana and history that this nation offers.
